I was so sorry to hear about the passing of Bishop Walter Hawkins. I remember as a teenager when Walter Hawkins and the family would come to Nashville, TN to perform concerts. The concerts were held at a local school auditorium. I would be up front every time I could. I would get there extra early in order to have a front row seat. As a matter of fact I would go directly in front of the stage. I was only 15 or 16 at the time. Not only was I enjoying the family singing, I also had my eyes on his nephew Joel as their drummer. Boy how time flies!!! My favorite song is “What Is This” I love that song among all of the others. I will truly miss his gifted voice as well as his ability to write beautiful songs unto the Lord! May God be the glory for the things He has done!

    Truly Sadden,

    Clara Reed

One of the high lights of my carreer was meeting and chatting with Bishop Hawkins in Orlanda Florida at the Tahillia Retreat in 2004. What a delight and a honor with such an humble man. He was not untouchable and for that I am much grateful. Thank you Bishop for being real to a beginner in music.

I too am touched by the passing of the infamous Walter Hawkins. Certainly, he has effected the gospel world with the many songs of Zion and his music shall live on beyond the man. So many of our gospel legends are going home and choose to believe that they are just going on before us…and deservingly so, for all of their labor of love and love for the Lord. I pray that God will strengthen the families and that they know that the world loved and have cherished Bishop Walter Hawkins contributions; his heartfelt, soul-full, music that was the breath and depth of gospel music. God bless you.

  6. Bishop C.L. Lorick, Jr. says:

In the early seventies until 1984, I hosted a contemporary music/talk show in the Columbia, SC area called Turning Point. It was on this show that I was able to introduce to this area artists like Andrae Crouch, Edwin Hawkins, and of course the Bishop, Walter Hawkins. The song “God Has Signed My Name” became my theme song. The Bishop’s music was first met with objections by some church leaders. It was far ahead of the times. This is proven by its freshness and artistic advancement even when it’s played today I will always appreciate the very clear and concise spiritual messages in his music. He left a true legacy.

I first saw Walter in Philadelphia, PA along with the Love Fellowship Choir. Before I even knew as much about “the anointing” as I do now (when I at the time was so young), I knew that GOD had His hand upon this super spiritual man of GOD. He always seemed to forget about what people were doing in the audience as he worshiped. It was as though he was looking into the “face of GOD” and he seemingly was lost in His presence as you’d watch GOD use him in an awesome way upon the stage and the anointing would be so heavy that it would flow right out into your spirit from where he was ministering. I was shocked to hear the news of his passing, but confident that “no doubt” he was now worhiping JESUS in person from Heaven. Blessings & much prayer goes out to his family & loved ones.
